Our Name

Kakaba, pronounced K'karba, is taken from a place name in Botswana, Xaxaba, pronounced with clicks (but we don't do that). It means "Place of the tall trees"

About Us

Kakaba Wines is a small winery owned by Chris and Jill Milner producing wines from the cool climate Adelaide Hills and other premium South Australian regions. We are based just outside the historic township of Hahndorf, but source grapes from a number of vineyards right across the Adelaide Hills from Gumeracha and Lenswood in the north, to Kuitpo in the south, right on the border with McLaren Vale.

Not only is the Adelaide Hills Region a brilliant climate for producing white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay, it also produces some excellent red varieties, elegant Shiraz, stunning Pinot Noir and in the right year beautiful Cabernet. However I must admit that we occasionally wander over the border and pick up a parcel or two of Shiraz from our friends in Langhorne Creek or McLaren Vale. As much as I love the elegance of cool climate reds, the warmer regions produce grapes with greater fruit intensity and hence make wines with more robust character and bigger, bolder fruit flavours – I think it’s the sunshine!
Our objective is to produce wines which have a sense of fun, varietal style and which offer great value for money and I think we have succeeded. We hope that you enjoy our wines.
